The 2010 Fisker Karma is a new gas/electric hybrid luxury car. The Karma is a 4-door, rear-wheel-drive sedan built in Finland and distributed by U.S.-based Fisker Automotive, Inc. It pairs a battery-powered electric motor with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder for 403 hp total. Unlike most hybrids, Karma uses plug-in technology the company calls Q DRIVE. It can run up to 50 miles solely on electric power. After that, the gasoline engine turns on a generator, which charges the car's lithium-ion battery pack to provide power to the electric motor. Since the electric motors drive the wheels directly, no transmission is needed. The driver can select between two driving modes. Stealth Drive is designed for maximum fuel economy. Sport Drive alters drivetrain behavior for maximum performance. An optional solar roof panel allows for additional battery-charging capability, and it's designed to keep the cabin cool on warm days. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Trim levels include EcoBase, EcoSport, and EcoChic. All use a touch-screen interface for climate and audio controls. EcoSport models have leather upholstery. EcoChic versions have fabric seats made from "bamboo viscose." We have not yet tested the 2010 Fisker Karma.

The 2008 Land Rover LR3 loses its V6 engine but gains a standard power front passenger seat and revised interior trim. This is the only Land Rover with seven-passenger seating. It comes in SE and HSE trims, both with a 300-hp 4.4-liter V8 and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity is 7716 lb. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, an antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. LR3s have all-wheel drive with low-range gearing and Land Rover's Terrain Response system. This system has a console switch that enables the driver to change suspension and powertrain calibrations to accommodate normal driving, slippery pavement, mud, sand, and low-speed off-roading. A locking center differential is standard, and a locking rear differential is available. LR3 has an air-spring suspension with four available ride heights and automatic load leveling. A navigation system and bi-xenon headlights are standard on HSE, available on SE. Heated front and rear seats are optional for all, and adaptive headlights are optional for HSE.

Fresh styling, more power, and new features highlighted the 2007 redesign of Acura's premium midsize all-wheel-drive sport-utility vehicle. MDX gained 2 inches in wheelbase and overall length, versus the 2001-06 model, but kept its seven-passenger seating. Once again, the MDX used a V6 as its sole engine, but a new 300-horsepower 3.7-liter version replaced the previous 253-horsepower 3.5-liter. Torque output rose by 25 pound-feet. The sole transmission remained a five-speed automatic. Gear ratios were lowered, and new Shift Hold logic could hold the transmission in gear when needed. Acura's rivals in this category included the BMW X5, Cadillac SRX, Lexus RX, and Volvo XC90. New-and standard-for 2007 was Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), which did not include low-range gearing but apportioned power between the rear wheels to enhance cornering ability. In a low-speed turn, SH-AWD could transfer up to 70 percent of torque output to the outside tire. Antilock braking and antiskid control also were standard. So were front side airbags and curtain side airbags that covered all three seating rows, and included rollover deployment. Other standard features included a sunroof, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and wireless cell phone link. Options came in three packages. The Technology Package had a rearview camera and a voice-activated navigation system that could display real-time traffic conditions. A Sport Package included those features plus a driver-adjustable Active Damping suspension that used 15 sensors to detect changes in road-surface qualities. Acura's Entertainment Package contained DVD entertainment, heated second-row seats, and a power liftgate.

Combining 21-mpg fuel economy with the towing capacity of a traditional SUV, the 2009 GMC Yukon Hybrid is an amazing piece of machinery. However, most folks would be better served by any of GM's full-size crossovers that are nearly as efficient and much less expensive.

Using a platform shared with the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, the GMC Terrain is set to slot into GMC’s lineup as a little brother to the successful Acadia full-size crossover. That means a tidy exterior package with good room inside, and thoughtful features that maximize either cargo or passenger capacity. Front-wheel drive will be standard, four-wheel drive an option
